Your guide to Silver Plated Cutlery

Add a touch of class to your table top with our extensive collection of silver plate cutlery.

Silver plate cutlery has a unique radiance and warmth and will give years of service. Over a period of time, silver plated cutlery will display the same aesthetically pleasing ‘patina’ characteristic of sterling silver cutlery.

We bring you silver plated cutlery direct from the leading British and European manufacturers, Arthur PriceCarrs Silver, Robbe & Berking and our own Sheffield range, which is why our prices are so competitive.

We clearly state the thickeness of silver deposit for each range – this is important because it is the thickness of the silver deposit that determines the durability of the cutlery.

There are two main types silver plate cutlery. The first is known as EPNS, which stands for “Electro Plated Nickel Silver“. Despite its name, Nickel Silver contains no silver at all, but is an alloy of Nickel, Zinc & Copper. A layer of pure silver is deposited electrolytically on the base metal to give a silver finish.

Two of our main suppliers manufacture EPNS cutlery: Carrs Silver and Robbe & Berking. The thickness of the Carrs silver plate is 20 microns of pure silver – the British Standard for 35 year silver plate.

Robbe & Berking silver plate cutlery has an incredible 60 Micron plate – making it the most durable and perfectly made silver plated cutlery you can buy! It is a worthy alternative to sterling silver at an attractive price. The silver plating is three times heavier than the deposit you get on good quality conventional silver plated cutlery and, as a result it, will last for generations, just like sterling silver.

The other type of silver plate uses stainless steel as the base metal. The advantage of stainleses steel is it is a lighter, but harder metal, which makes it slightly more durable. A thin layer of nickel silver is actually applied to the stainleses steel, before the silver can be applied – as silver will not adhere to stainless steel as effectively. Arthur Price use this method for their Sovereign Silver Plated cutlery – to which they apply a fantastic 25 microns, guaranteed for 50 years. And our own Sheffield silver plated cutlery has a 20 micron deposit.

Another advantage of making silver plate using stainless steel is that there can be identical collections of both stainless steel and silver plate cutlery – whereas you cannot achieve the same patterns in stainless steel that you can in nickel silver – because the latter is a softer metal; therefore different tools are used. Stainless steel also has the advantage of being a less expensive metal; therefore the silver plated cutlery in these ranges are more economical!
